Nnamdi Kanu imprisonment legal and health issues

In late July 2026, the family of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu announced that he would not accept a transfer from the Sokoto Custodial Centre to Abuja without a court order, arguing that his current location is central to his appeal and that the move could violate his constitutional rights. The family also accused Kanu’s lead counsel of professional negligence for failing to challenge a 2022 stay‑of‑execution application, which they say allowed the government to keep him detained for an additional 14 months.

A week later, the family highlighted serious health concerns, reporting that Kanu’s potassium levels were dangerously low and that he suffered hypertension, kidney and cardiac problems while in custody. After an independent medical team intervened, his potassium rose modestly and some symptoms eased. The family called for unrestricted access to their preferred physicians, protection for the independent doctors from intimidation, and an independent review of Kanu’s medical records, sending petitions to Nigerian authorities and international human‑rights organisations.

By mid-August 2026, Kanu asserted that decisions regarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity should be determined by the people through a referendum. His family expressed concern over judicial delays, requesting the immediate hearing of two pending cases—one before the Supreme Court and another before the Court of Appeal.
