Peruvian police face arrests, threats and deadly clashes amid rising violence

Police authorities in Peru reported a series of violent incidents involving law‑enforcement personnel. In Tarapoto, a police officer was detained for 48 hours after allegedly obstructing a identity‑check operation, according to regional police chief Wilson Rubén Villalobos Olórtegui. In the border region of Tumbes, officers at the Puerto Pizarro station received death threats from the criminal group “El Clan de la Nueva Generación”, prompting the police chief José Quiroz Dávila to reinforce the post with special‑operations and community‑guard units.

In Piura, a young police sub‑officer had his service pistol stolen by a gang operating in the La Arena district, leading to intensified searches for the suspects. Meanwhile, in Trujillo, police engaged a suspected gang member in a vehicle pursuit that ended with a fatal shooting; three suspects, including a minor, were arrested and weapons and explosives were seized.

A separate incident in the Huancavelica province saw an army patrol in civilian clothes open fire on a civilian truck, killing five youths returning from a football tournament. Initial claims of a drug‑terrorist confrontation were later disproved, and the eight soldiers involved were released after a court overturned their preventive detention, sparking criticism over impunity and calls for greater civilian protection.
