NOAA forecasts solar activity and radio interference for late August 2026

Space weather forecasts for late August 2026 indicate varying levels of solar activity affecting Earth. While the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) does not currently forecast a geomagnetic storm of G1 category or higher for August 28, there is a 55% probability of moderate radio interference (R1–R2) and a 15% risk of stronger events (R3–R5).

Other projections include a 10% chance of an S1-level solar radiation storm. Although a G1 geomagnetic storm was previously anticipated for August 27–28 due to solar wind from a coronal hole, current NOAA data suggests conditions may not reach the G1 threshold on the 28th.

Potential impacts of such activity include minor fluctuations in power grids, isolated issues with satellite systems, and temporary disruptions to high-frequency radio communications. Experts note that while G1-level storms are classified as weak, they can affect technological systems, though they are unlikely to impact human health directly.
