Noida-Delhi bus gang-rape investigation deepens
Investigations are intensifying into the alleged gang-rape of a 16-year-old girl on a sleeper bus traveling from Greater Noida to Delhi. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident, issuing notices to police chiefs in both Delhi and Noida for detailed reports.
Authorities have identified several safety and regulatory failures. The bus involved reportedly had multiple pending violations regarding permits, safety, and speed, with fines totaling ₹63,000. Additionally, investigations highlighted a lack of roadside surveillance along the 43-kilometer route. In response, Delhi authorities have implemented new safety rules for buses, including bans on curtains and tinted films.
Law enforcement has closed three travel agency offices and seized nine buses in connection with the case. The incident has also sparked political criticism, with leaders such as Rahul Gandhi demanding accountability from the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government. Meanwhile, jurisdictional disputes between the Uttar Pradesh and Delhi police forces have been reported.
