Nolan Wells death sparks federal investigation calls and defamation lawsuits
The death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, a Black college football player found dead near Mississippi’s Horn Island following a July 4 boat trip, has triggered federal interest and multiple legal actions.
While the FBI and a local grand jury previously found no evidence of foul play, the Wells family and several members of Congress are calling for a federal investigation. This push follows two autopsies that left the cause and manner of death undetermined, with family attorneys citing concerns over blunt-force trauma and the lack of water in the teen’s lungs.
Simultaneously, three of Wells’ friends—Warren Hudson, Jax Pitalo, and Morgan Seymour—have filed a federal defamation lawsuit against former NFL star Terrell Owens. The suit alleges Owens defamed the group after posting on X that they should be “ARRESTED IMMEDIATELY!!” following social media theories suggesting they were involved in Wells’ death and a subsequent cover-up. The plaintiffs claim these accusations have led to widespread death threats and harassment. The friends have also indicated intent to pursue legal action against other public figures and content creators regarding their comments on the case.
