Nolan Wells case: subpoenas, audio evidence and alleged heavy drinking spark controversy
Eighteen‑year‑old Nolan Wells vanished on July 4, 2024 during a boat outing to Horn Island, a barrier island off the Mississippi coast. His body was recovered two days later, on July 6, by a National Park Service ranger at the island’s north‑western tip. An independent autopsy commissioned by the family concluded the manner of death was “undetermined pending investigation,” and authorities have said they see no evidence of foul play.
The family, represented by civil‑rights attorney Ben Crump, has sought further information by filing subpoenas for Wells’s social‑media and location‑tracking data from apps such as Snapchat, WhatsApp, TikTok, Meta Platforms and Life360. At the same time, a document from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources released on July 5 reported that witnesses said Wells had been drinking heavily and remained on the island with an unidentified female, a detail that many media outlets highlighted and that prompted accusations of victim‑blaming.
Newly released and enhanced audio from the July 4 emergency call to a towing service, processed by audio engineer Jeanetta Brantley, reveals additional background voices and has intensified public speculation about the timeline. A video showing seven people aboard the boat, with Wells absent, further supports the claim that he stayed behind on Horn Island. The case has generated online death threats toward the family and friends and extensive commentary on race and media coverage.
