Mississippi grand jury declines indictments in death of Nolan Wells

A Jackson County grand jury has unanimously decided not to issue indictments in the death of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old Black student-athlete who went missing during a July 4 boating trip near Horn Island, Mississippi. The grand jury, which reviewed 132 subpoenas and heard testimony from 43 witnesses, concluded that the circumstances of Wells' death were consistent with drowning.

District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath stated that the investigation found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing or racial motivation behind the incident. While the official cause and manner of death remain undetermined by both the state medical examiner and an independent pathologist, the grand jury noted that the condition and location of Wells' body supported a drowning diagnosis by exclusion.

The decision has been met with skepticism from Wells' family and their legal representative, civil rights attorney Ben Crump. Crump highlighted unexplained blunt force trauma found on the back of Wells' head and body, arguing that the investigation failed to provide definitive answers. The family and the NAACP are calling for the release of the full investigative file and an independent investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.
