Nolan Wells family marks 19th birthday amid ongoing death investigation

The family of Nolan Wells is marking what would have been the 19-year-old’s birthday with a day of prayer and reflection as investigations into his death continue. Wells, a community college student-athlete, disappeared following a Fourth of July boat trip to Horn Island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. His body was recovered two days later.

Jackson County District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath stated that while the public seeks answers, no additional information can be released during the ongoing investigation. Investigators intend to present evidence, including the state’s autopsy report, to a grand jury. McIlrath noted that a grand jury proceeding is standard procedure for unnatural or suspicious deaths and does not inherently imply a crime occurred.

The Wells family has expressed frustration with the lack of substantive updates and has called for transparency and accountability. A prayer rally is scheduled at Greater St. John AME in Biloxi to honor his memory.
