Nolan Wells' family seeks federal investigation into death

The family of 18-year-old Nolan Wells is calling for a federal investigation into the death of the Mississippi college student following a state grand jury's decision not to pursue criminal charges. Supported by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, the family maintains that the official explanation of drowning is inconsistent with medical findings.

Legal representatives cite an independent autopsy by Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr., which reportedly found “unexplained blunt-force injuries to the back of his head” and noted an absence of water in Wells’ lungs or stomach. The family and their legal team are also seeking the public release of the grand jury's investigative materials and the official autopsy report.

Forensic analysis of Wells’ cellphone has also become a focal point. Attorney Ben Crump stated that messaging data, including 282 pages of Snapchat conversations, provided telling information regarding the days leading up to his disappearance during a July 4 boating trip to Horn Island. Some messages reportedly indicated concerns among friends regarding potential racism on the island.

Florida Representative Frederica Wilson has joined the push for federal involvement, urging the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch to review the case.
