Nolla Health launches AI-driven acne prescription service in Utah
Nolla Health has received regulatory authorization in Utah to launch a pilot program allowing its AI-driven application, Nolla Derm, to issue initial medical prescriptions for acne. This marks a significant milestone as one of the first instances where an algorithm is authorized to evaluate symptoms and prescribe treatments autonomously.
The service aims to address healthcare shortages in areas where access to dermatologists is limited. In Utah, the average wait time for a medical visit is 61 days, and eleven counties lack dermatologists. Users aged 18 and older can use the app to complete a medical questionnaire and a facial scan via smartphone. Within 10 to 15 minutes, the system generates a personalized treatment plan and, if appropriate, an initial prescription.
To ensure patient safety, the rollout follows a three-phase implementation plan. Initially, every AI-generated prescription will be reviewed and signed by a physician. As the system scales, it will move to autonomous generation with daily medical reviews, eventually reaching a stage of full autonomy with weekly medical quality control checks. Nolla has reported a 96% match rate between AI recommendations and previous human medical diagnoses.
