Utah AI medical prescription pilot program
Overview
Utah has authorized a pilot program for Nolla Health, marking the first time a U.S. state has permitted artificial intelligence to issue initial prescriptions for mild-to-moderate acne rather than merely managing refills. Through the Nolla Derm mobile application, residents aged 18 and older undergo a 10-to-15-minute assessment involving a medical questionnaire and a five-angle facial scan. The AI then selects treatments from a pre-approved list of topical medications.
The service aims to address healthcare shortages in regions where access to specialists is limited; in Utah, the average wait time for a medical visit is 61 days, and eleven counties lack dermatologists. To maintain safety, the rollout follows a three-stage oversight model. Initially, two licensed physicians must review and approve every prescription for the first 100 patients. The second stage involves up to 500 patients where the AI issues prescriptions directly, subject to weekly retrospective reviews by physicians. The final stage moves toward full autonomy, with physicians auditing at least 10% of monthly prescriptions and all cases involving side effects. The AI is strictly prohibited from prescribing oral medications or isotretinoin.
Nolla Health has reported a “96% match rate” between AI recommendations and previous medical diagnoses.
