Noosa Triathlon cancels swim leg due to shark sightings

Organizers of the Noosa Triathlon, the world’s largest Olympic-distance triathlon, have cancelled the swim portion of the race for the first time in its 43-year history. The decision follows multiple shark sightings near the race perimeter at Noosa’s Main Beach.

Spokesman Craig Heydon stated that while organizers initially attempted to alter the course to keep athletes closer to shore, the presence of marine life within the 1.5-kilometre swim zone made it unsafe to proceed. Recent heavy rainfall may have contributed to the increased shark activity.

To accommodate the change, elite competitors replaced the swim with a five-kilometre run before proceeding to the cycling and running stages. The event, which draws over 13,000 participants to Australia’s Sunshine Coast, continues with the modified format.
