Norte Grande Parliament meets in Corrientes to address regional crises
Representatives from ten provinces of northern Argentina (NOA and NEA) convened in Corrientes for the 60th Plenary Session of the Norte Grande Parliament. The assembly focused on critical regional issues, including the economic crisis, infrastructure deficits, and climate-related emergencies.
A primary point of contention is the privatization of the Belgrano Cargas railway. Regional leaders are demanding that the national government include mandatory investment and maintenance for the C-14 and C-15 branches in upcoming tenders to ensure connectivity with Chile and Bolivia.
Other key agenda items included: • Requests for differential electricity tariffs due to high regional temperatures. • Addressing the sovereignty and boundary issues regarding Isla Apipé. • The proposal for a Federal Convergence Fund for the Norte Grande to reduce historical inequalities. • Regional responses to the El Niño phenomenon and its impact on agriculture and infrastructure.
The session also highlighted political tensions, specifically regarding the timing of the summit during local flooding in Corrientes and the ongoing debate over the impact of national macroeconomic policies on regional purchasing power.
