North Africa faces extreme heatwaves and thunderstorms

North Africa is experiencing extreme weather conditions, characterized by intense heatwaves and localized thunderstorms across Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia.

In Algeria, the National Meteorological Office has issued orange alerts for several wilayas. Temperatures in the south, including In Salah and Adrar, are expected to reach between 48°C and 49°C. Coastal and interior regions will also see significant heat, with temperatures ranging from 39°C to 45°C. Thunderstorms are also forecasted for certain areas.

Morocco is facing similar conditions, with temperatures in the south and southeast potentially hitting 45°C. The meteorological services have placed several provinces under orange vigilance, warning of thunderstorms, hail, and strong wind gusts, particularly in the Atlas and Rif mountain ranges.

Tunisia is seeing a sharp rise in temperatures due to the sirocco wind, with some areas experiencing heat indices as high as 51°C in coastal cities like Bizerte. Most regions are seeing temperatures 6 to 10 degrees above seasonal norms, reaching up to 47°C. Localized thunderstorms and rain are expected in the central-western regions.
