North African green hydrogen projects attract international investment

Green hydrogen initiatives are expanding across North Africa as international interest in clean energy infrastructure grows. In Morocco, the ORNX alliance—comprising Ortus Climate Mitigation and the Acciona & Nordex Green Hydrogen joint venture—is developing a project to produce green hydrogen and ammonia in Laayoune. The initiative recently secured a $5.7 million grant from the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) to fund feasibility studies and preliminary engineering assessments aimed at making the venture financeable for international markets, particularly in Europe.

Simultaneously, German companies are exploring energy opportunities in the region. A prospecting mission organized by energiewaechter GmbH is scheduled for late September 2026, covering Algeria and Tunisia. The mission aims to identify project opportunities and potential consortiums related to the SoutH2 corridor, focusing on Power-to-X technologies, hydrogen production, electrolysis, and energy storage solutions.
