Overview

The United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) and ORNX Green Hydrogen entered into a grant agreement to fund a pre-front-end-engineering design (Pre-FEED) study for a green ammonia production facility in Laâyoune, Morocco. This project aims to assess the technical and economic feasibility of converting renewable-energy-produced green hydrogen into ammonia, supporting Morocco’s goal of becoming a regional clean-energy export hub.

As international interest in North African clean energy infrastructure grows, the ORNX alliance—consisting of Ortus Climate Mitigation and the Acciona & Nordex Green Hydrogen joint venture—is utilizing the $5.7 million USTDA grant to make the Laâyoune venture financeable for international markets, specifically targeting Europe. Concurrently, German companies are conducting prospecting missions in Algeria and Tunisia to identify opportunities related to the SoutH2 corridor, focusing on electrolysis, hydrogen production, and energy storage.
