North American Trade Pact T‑MEC Moves Toward 16‑Year Extension

Mexico and Canada have formally announced their intention to extend the United States‑MexicoCanada Agreement (T‑MEC) for another 16 years, ahead of the treaty’s scheduled review in July. Canada’s trade minister Dominic LeBlanc sent a letter to U.S. and Mexican officials confirming Ottawa’s support, while Mexico’s Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard also notified the U.S. of its interest in continuation. The agreement, which replaced NAFTA in 2020, would automatically roll over for 16 years if all three parties agree.

Parallel discussions in Tijuana focus on modernising border procedures, digitalising regulatory processes and creating single‑window systems to boost trade efficiency. Stakeholders emphasise the need for continued investment in infrastructure and technology, aiming to strengthen North‑American supply chains and reduce dependence on China, while also addressing regional environmental concerns such as the Tijuana River.
