North Brabant pauses vacation for emergency debate on revoking poultry farm licences
The Provincial Council of North Brabant (Provinciale Staten) will interrupt the summer recess next month to hold an urgent debate on August 14 about withdrawing the licences of five poultry farms located near vulnerable nature areas. The debate was requested by seven opposition parties – BBB, 50PLUS, JA21, ChristenUnie‑SGP, CDA, PVV and Forum voor Democratie – who argue the revocation is disproportionate and creates a dangerous precedent.
Provincial officials say the measure is drastic but necessary after court rulings required a rapid reduction of nitrogen emissions from livestock operations and negotiations failed to produce viable alternatives. The province claims it has no other option but to proceed with the licence withdrawals, while the agricultural union LTO has condemned the decision as abandoning farmers who have reduced emissions and invested in compliance.
