BCHL to oversee Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League

The British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) and the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) have extended their partnership through an enhanced management agreement. Under this deal, the BCHL office will oversee VIJHL operations starting with the 2027-28 season, acting at the direction of the VIJHL board of governors and executive committee.

Both leagues operate independently after leaving the Hockey Canada ecosystem. The partnership allows VIJHL players to affiliate with BCHL teams, serving as a development system for prospects. BCHL commissioner Steven Cocker stated the agreement is a “step forward for an already growing athlete-first independent development system.”

The leagues have seen shifts in player demographics since becoming independent, with a notable increase in non-Canadian players in the VIJHL. Last season, players from Czechia and Slovakia finished at the top of the league's scoring race, marking the first time since 2006-07 that players from outside Canada led the scoring.
