North German leaders demand more federal funding for ports

Leaders from the five North German states—Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Bremen, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, and Schleswig-Holstein—met in Rostock for their annual conference to discuss economic growth, energy, and maritime infrastructure.

The regional leaders emphasized the North's role as a vital economic driver for Germany, noting that the combined value of goods and services produced in these states is expected to reach approximately 806 billion euros by 2025, representing about 18 percent of Germany's GDP.

A primary demand from the group is significantly increased federal funding for the expansion and renovation of German seaports. Currently, these states receive 38.3 million euros annually from the federal government, a figure leaders argue is insufficient given that approximately 62 percent of German exports and 60 percent of imports are handled via sea routes.

Additionally, the leaders called for the removal of barriers to the energy transition, advocating for affordable energy prices, improved market designs for offshore energy tenders, and federal support to ensure that the production of offshore and grid infrastructure components remains within Germany.
