India weather alert: Heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast across 20 states

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued widespread weather alerts across much of India, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning for approximately 20 states. Significant weather activity is expected in Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and several northeastern states.

In Uttar Pradesh, 44 districts are under a yellow alert for lightning and gusty winds. Delhi-NCR is bracing for unsettled weather, including thunderstorms and potential heavy rainfall in Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh. Some regions may experience wind speeds reaching up to 80 km/h.

The current weather patterns are attributed to cyclonic circulations and the movement of the monsoon trough. While heavy rain is expected in many areas, the IMD indicates that the southwest monsoon is likely to begin its withdrawal from northwest India around September 19. Additionally, a low-pressure area is expected to form near the North Andaman Sea by September 19, which may further increase rainfall activity in surrounding regions.
