North Korea and Russia expand military ties with missile and troop transfers

Military cooperation between Russia and North Korea is expanding, characterized by the transfer of ballistic missiles and the potential deployment of additional troops to support Russian forces. Reports indicate that North Korea has already supplied artillery ammunition and missiles to Russia, with some missiles reportedly used in strikes against Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia plans to receive an additional 30,000 troops from North Korea, noting that preparations have been underway in Russia’s Voronezh region since June. Ukrainian military intelligence also reported that a North Korean missile unit, consisting of approximately 90 personnel, has begun deploying to western Russia and could be equipped with up to 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers.

This deepening alliance, formalized by a 2024 strategic partnership treaty, provides Russia with manpower and weaponry while offering North Korea economic, technological, and strategic benefits, including access to Russian food, energy, and cash. Western governments, including the United States and South Korea, have warned that this military exchange intensifies the conflict in Ukraine and poses a significant global security threat.
