North Korea launches ballistic missile toward Sea of Japan
North Korea launched at least one ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan on the morning of October 3, 2026. According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense, the missile reached a maximum altitude of approximately 90 kilometers and traveled about 680 kilometers, landing outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). No damage to aircraft or vessels has been reported.
Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, issued a statement confirming the drill involved the launch of medium-range strategic missiles. This event marks the 10th ballistic missile launch by North Korea in 2026.
In response, officials from Japan, South Korea, and the United States held telephone consultations. The three nations confirmed that the launch violates United Nations Security Council resolutions and demanded that North Korea cease provocative actions that threaten regional and international peace and security. The three countries reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close cooperation to address the situation.
