North Korea launches ballistic missile toward East Sea amid DMZ tensions

North Korea launched a ballistic missile from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea at approximately 06:30 local time on October 3. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff reported the missile traveled over 700 kilometers. Japan issued an emergency alert, noting the object likely landed outside its exclusive economic zone.

The launch occurs amid heightened tensions following a September 21 incident in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), where three South Korean soldiers were injured by suspected North Korean landmines. While South Korea and the UN Command attribute the injuries to North Korean mines, Kim Yo Jong, sister of Kim Jong Un, dismissed the claims as a “self-staged farce” and rejected demands for an apology.

In response to the launch, South Korea's National Security Council held an emergency meeting. The South Korean military is increasing surveillance and coordinating intelligence sharing with the United States and Japan to maintain a robust defense posture.
