North Korea launches multiple ballistic missiles toward Sea of Japan

North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan on Monday morning, according to the South Korean military. The projectiles were detected being fired from the Pyongyang area at approximately 09:20 local time.

South Korean officials reported that the missiles included different types, with at least one traveling a distance exceeding 900 kilometers. Japan's Ministry of Defense identified at least two launches, noting that one missile appeared to follow an irregular trajectory, suggesting the possibility of advanced maneuvering capabilities. Both missiles reportedly landed in the sea, outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone.

The launches occur amid heightened regional tensions following South Korea's recent successful test of a domestically developed hypersonic glide vehicle. Military analysts interpret the North Korean activity as a show of force in response to South Korea's advancements in missile technology. Additionally, the situation remains volatile following a recent incident in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where three South Korean soldiers were injured by landmine explosions, an event South Korea attributes to North Korean forces.
