North Korea launched several short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea (Sea of Japan) on Saturday morning, approximately 5:20 a.m. local time. The missiles were detected originating from the Wonsan area on the country's eastern coast and traveled roughly 250 kilometers before landing in the sea.

The launches occurred one day after the conclusion of 'Freedom Edge,' a five-day trilateral military exercise involving South Korea, the United States, and Japan. The exercises, held in international waters near Jeju Island, were designed to enhance maritime, aerial, cyber, and missile defense coordination. North Korean Defense Minister Kim Song-gi had previously criticized the maneuvers, labeling them a security threat and warning of strong countermeasures.

South Korea’s National Security Office convened an emergency meeting to assess the security implications and evaluate response measures. The South Korean military is maintaining high readiness and is sharing intelligence regarding the launches with the U.S. and Japan. While the U.S. Pacific Command stated the event does not pose an immediate threat to U.S. territory or allies, South Korean authorities condemned the action as a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
