North Korea prepares massive troop surge to assist Russia in Ukraine war

North Korea is preparing a significant surge of troops to support Russia in its ongoing war against Ukraine. While an initial deployment of approximately 14,000 to 15,000 personnel was estimated to be assisting in the Kursk region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated that Pyongyang may deploy an additional 30,000 to 50,000 troops to Russian territory.

In addition to personnel, North Korea has reportedly supplied Russia with millions of artillery rounds and ballistic missiles, some of which have been used in attacks on Ukrainian targets such as Zaporizhzhia. Intelligence estimates suggest that North Korean forces have already suffered thousands of casualties in the conflict.

Military analysts suggest that these North Korean forces may be utilized to secure Russian border territories, such as Kursk and Voronezh, which could allow Russia to redeploy its own occupational forces to active front lines in areas like Kharkiv or Sumy. Zelenskyy has warned that North Korea’s growing combat experience poses a security threat to both Ukraine and the broader Asia-Pacific region.
