North Korea tests AI-powered Zam-2.0 precision torpedo system

North Korea has announced the successful underwater test of the Zam-2.0, a new super-speed, precision-guided torpedo system. According to state media, the weapon incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance target detection and guidance functions.

The test, conducted on Thursday, aimed to verify technical upgrades to the weapon's propulsion and guidance systems. North Korean authorities stated that the propulsion technology has been refined through more than 180 different tests conducted over the past five years. The development involved several defense institutions, including the Defense Academy of Sciences and the Torpedo Weapons Research Bureau.

Analysts suggest that the integration of AI could allow the torpedo to better distinguish between actual targets and decoys used by the United States and South Korea. Some experts also speculate that the system may function as a supercavitation torpedo due to its high-speed capabilities and rocket propulsion. This announcement follows recent military activity from Pyongyang, including the test-firing of two types of cruise missiles from a submarine earlier this week.
