North Korea tests maneuverable ballistic missile

North Korea conducted a test of a new ballistic missile launched from the eastern coastal city of Wonsan. Kim Yo Jong, sister of leader Kim Jong Un, stated the strategic medium-range missile possesses the capability to change direction during flight, a feature intended to evade the missile defense systems of South Korea and Japan.

South Korean military officials reported the missile traveled a distance of over 700 kilometers, while Japan's Ministry of Defense recorded a flight of approximately 680 kilometers. Kim Yo Jong used the discrepancy in tracking data to argue that neighboring countries failed to accurately monitor the missile's flight.

The launch prompted an emergency meeting at the South Korean presidential office and an alert from the military. South Korea has also announced the exchange of intelligence regarding the launch with the United States and Japan. While the U.S. Pacific Command is monitoring the situation, it stated the event poses no immediate threat to U.S. personnel or territory.

This escalation occurs amid heightened tensions following explosions involving landmines near the border, which injured three South Korean soldiers. The missile test follows North Korea's rejection of South Korean demands regarding the border incidents.
