North Korea tests strategic cruise missiles from underwater environment

North Korea conducted tests of two types of strategic cruise missiles launched from an underwater environment in its eastern waters. According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the objective of the test was to evaluate the readiness of the nation's underwater combat systems and to demonstrate the reliability of its nuclear deterrence capabilities.

While the exact launch platform was not specified, visual evidence suggests the possible use of the Hero Kim Kun Ok submarine, a vessel introduced in 2023 that is reportedly designed for launching nuclear weapons. If the Hero Kim Kun Ok was used, it would mark the first known weapons test from that specific submarine.

The testing comes amid increased military demonstrations by Pyongyang, which experts suggest is an attempt to exert pressure on the United States for diplomatic concessions. The development of submarine-launched systems is viewed as a significant threat to South Korea and the United States, as such launches are difficult to detect in advance.
