North Korea tests AI-equipped Zam-2.0 precision torpedo

North Korea has conducted an underwater test of a new precision-guided, high-speed torpedo system named Zam-2.0. According to the state news agency KCNA, the torpedo utilizes artificial intelligence for target detection and guidance functions.

The test, which took place on Thursday, October 15, was intended to verify technical upgrades and improvements in propulsion efficiency and rocket propulsion system performance. KCNA reported that the underlying propulsion technology was developed through more than 180 tests conducted over the last five years.

This development follows reports from earlier in the week that North Korea tested two types of strategic cruise missiles from a submarine on Wednesday, October 14. South Korean military officials stated they tracked these cruise missiles from launch through their terminal phase. Analysts suggest the missile launches may have involved the 3,000-ton Hero Kim Kun Ok submarine.

The recent surge in weapons testing occurs amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula and an intensifying arms race, as both North and South Korea develop advanced systems to bypass missile defenses.
