North Korea opens defense museum featuring Hwasong-20 ICBM

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has inaugurated the National Defense Revolution Museum in Pyongyang to showcase the country's military advancements. Accompanied by his wife, Ri Sol Ju, and daughter, Ju Ae, Kim inspected an exhibition that includes the Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which is reportedly capable of reaching the continental United States. The display also features drones, submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and hypersonic weaponry.

The museum opening coincides with a period of heightened diplomatic interest, as U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated the possibility of a meeting with Kim during his upcoming trip to Asia in November, potentially around the APEC summit in China. Analysts suggest the exhibition serves as strategic propaganda to bolster North Korea's negotiating position.

In a separate but related development, North Korea confirmed the test-firing of a tactical ballistic missile on October 12, aimed at upgrading core components of its offensive weapon systems. This follows reports from South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff regarding multiple ballistic missile launches from the Pyongyang area toward the East Sea, one of which reportedly traveled over 900 kilometers. These launches mark North Korea's 16th ballistic missile test of 2026.
