North Korean troop deployment in Russia sparks diplomatic tension

President Volodymyr Zelensky has reported that over 8,000 North Korean soldiers are currently stationed in Russia and Ukraine. Furthermore, new intelligence suggests that approximately 10,000 additional North Korean personnel are being recruited and trained for potential deployment to support Russian operations.

Estimates from Ukraine and South Korea indicate that North Korea has sent between 14,000 and 15,000 troops to Russia since 2024, primarily operating in the Kursk region. Beyond manpower, North Korea is also accused of supplying Russia with artillery shells, mortars, long-range artillery, and ballistic missiles.

These developments have caused diplomatic friction between Kyiv and Seoul. South Korea expressed outrage after Zelensky publicly disclosed the transfer of two North Korean prisoners to South Korea, an act Seoul claims violated a confidentiality agreement. The South Korean National Intelligence Service suggests the disclosure may have been a strategic move to influence South Korean public opinion in favor of providing more military aid to Ukraine. Ukraine has denied the existence of such an agreement and has not issued an apology.
