North Macedonia advances energy and air transport infrastructure

North Macedonia’s energy ministry expects the 68‑km gas interconnector with Greece to be completed next year, linking the two countries’s networks for natural gas and hydrogen. The project, valued at over €5 billion, is backed by the European Union, the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and follows recent agreements with Greek operator DESFA and the state gas firm NOMAGAS.

At the same time, the country’s civil aviation authority is modernising airport security with a new baggage‑screening CT system, funded by a €1 million investment. The upgrade makes North Macedonia the first Balkan state to use such advanced technology, while 28 new air routes have opened in the past two years and passenger numbers are expected to exceed 3.5 million this year.

Both initiatives aim to boost the nation’s energy security and position it as a regional transport hub.
