North Macedonia reforms allow soldiers to remain in Army after age 45
The North Macedonian government has approved a reform allowing professional soldiers who reach the age of 45 to transition from military status to civilian roles within the Army. This change transforms their employment from fixed-term to indefinite contracts, providing job security until retirement.
Defense Minister Vlado Misajlovski and Chief of the General Staff Major General Sashko Lafčiski announced that the measure addresses a long-standing issue that has persisted for over 15 years. Under the new system, these former professional soldiers will be responsible for the security of Army property, barracks, and garrisons.
While the civilian transition is a new option, existing paths remain available, including financial severance packages and transfers to other state institutions. The reform is expected to affect approximately 100 soldiers starting next year. Additionally, Misajlovski noted that agreements have been reached with the Ministry of Finance regarding collective bargaining and salary increases for the military.
