North Macedonia energy regulators consider smart meter rollout
The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) is preparing a report for the government regarding the potential procurement and gradual introduction of smart electricity meters across North Macedonia. According to ERC President Aco Ristov, these devices would allow for remote reading and provide consumers with real-time information on their electricity usage and costs.
However, the Engineers of the Republic of Macedonia (IRMM) have expressed opposition to the mandatory mass replacement of existing meters. The organization warns that the significant costs associated with the procurement, installation, and maintenance of the new infrastructure could create a financial burden for citizens, potentially passed on through electricity bills, network fees, or public funds.
IRMM argues that current issues with meter reading can be addressed by strictly enforcing the existing Energy Law, which requires that if consumption is not directly measured, bills must be based on estimated usage and reconciled with real consumption at least once every three months. While not opposing the technology itself, the engineers suggest smart meters are more practically suited for prosumers and energy communities rather than mandatory household use.
