North Macedonia energy sector management
Overview
North Macedonia is managing various aspects of its energy sector, ranging from large-scale infrastructure oversight to consumer support.
A State Audit Office report highlighted systemic weaknesses in the permitting process for photovoltaic power plants between 2022 and May 2025. Despite solar production increasing 15 times between 2022 and 2025, auditors identified a lack of institutional coordination and the absence of an Indicative Plan for renewable energy construction until May 2025. While a new Energy Law was passed in May 2025, concerns remain regarding the implementation of secondary legislation and monitoring.
In a separate effort to support energy consumers, the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources announced a 2026 program to distribute vouchers for inverter air conditioning units. This initiative targets vulnerable households, specifically those with members receiving disability benefits, to assist with energy efficiency.
