North Macedonia faces surge in youth violence amid social media use

Psychologists warn that excessive time on social media and lack of physical activity are driving increasing violence among North Macedonian youths. Ajla Bilalli notes that many young perpetrators have themselves been victims earlier, seeking societal favor and strength. Families are urged to listen to and support children emotionally, while schools, mental‑health centers and other institutions are called upon to intervene.

UNICEF reports that 23% of 13‑ to 15‑year‑olds have experienced bullying in recent months, and hundreds of cases of child sexual violence have been recorded. More than two‑thirds of children aged 1‑14 experience some form of violent discipline at home, including psychological aggression or physical punishment. The agency is urging stronger legal protection, parental support, staff training in schools for early detection, and enhanced online safety for children.
