North Macedonia forms National Committee for Journalist Safety

The North Macedonian government has decided to establish a National Committee for the Protection and Safety of Journalists. The committee is tasked with monitoring the safety of media workers and fostering cooperation between state institutions and the media community.

A key objective of the committee is to develop a national action plan by December 15, 2026. This plan will focus on four primary areas: prevention, protection, effective prosecution of perpetrators, and promotion and education.

According to government spokesperson Marija Miteva, the prevention strategy will emphasize media pluralism and institutional dialogue, while the protection component will include rapid response mechanisms, police and legal assistance, and safeguards against digital threats. The committee will include representatives from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Digital Transformation, the Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Media Services, the Academy of Judges and Public Prosecutors, Macedonian Radio Television, and the Association of Journalists of Macedonia.
