Balkan journalist safety initiatives

Overview

In late 2026, Greece and North Macedonia announced separate governmental initiatives to enhance the safety and protection of media workers.

In Greece, General Secretary of Communication and Information Dimitris Kirmikiroglou introduced a National Action Plan for the Safety of Journalists. The plan includes 84 actions focused on providing protection and training for reporters in war zones, natural disasters, and climate emergencies. It also features psychological support, assistance for families, confidential reporting mechanisms for harassment, and anti-SLAPP protections.

North Macedonia established a National Committee for the Protection and Safety of Journalists to monitor media worker safety and foster institutional cooperation. The committee is tasked with developing a national action plan by December 15, 2026, centered on four pillars: prevention, protection, effective prosecution of perpetrators, and promotion and education. The protection strategy aims to include rapid response mechanisms, legal assistance, and safeguards against digital threats.
