North Macedonia infrastructure progress and Sharr Mountains vandalism

In North Macedonia, infrastructure and tourism developments are facing both progress and setbacks. The construction of the Prilep–Manastir highway is accelerating, with the first completed kilometers expected by 2027. The entire route is projected to be finished by the end of 2029, featuring three lanes in each direction. Alongside this, Prilep is seeing over 12 million euros in capital investments, including water networks, sewage, and social housing.

Conversely, mountain tourism in the Sharr Mountains has been impacted by vandalism. More than 45 of the 112 winter orientation markers placed along the trail from Kodra e Diellit to Maja e Titos have been damaged, destroyed, or removed. This project, supported by the embassies of Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, is critical for climber safety during harsh winter conditions. Local officials and the Austrian Embassy have called for legal action against those responsible, noting that the destruction poses direct risks to mountaineers.
