Mali Sharr National Park environmental protection

Overview

Following the cancellation of two small hydroelectric plant projects, Shkumbini 84 and 85, Mali Sharr National Park in North Macedonia has begun removing thousands of iron rods from the Leshnica spring area.

Park director Evzal Elmazi stated that the removal is part of enforcing the park’s protection rules. While environmental activists have welcomed the action, they have also called for an investigation into ecosystem damage and requested funding for restoration. This development follows previous ecological protests and a decision to prohibit hydroelectric development within the park’s protected zones.
