North Macedonia launches AI pilot to detect landfill fires
The Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning of North Macedonia has signed a cooperation memorandum to implement a pilot system for the early detection of landfill fires. The agreement was signed by Minister Muhamet Hodža, the Director of the Crisis Management Center, and representatives from the Skopje-based company Modirum Platforms.
The pilot project utilizes advanced technology, including modern cameras, intelligent video analytics, and artificial intelligence, to detect smoke, fire, and other environmental risks in real time. The Crisis Management Center will provide 24-hour monitoring and notify relevant authorities immediately upon identifying a risk to ensure rapid response and improved coordination.
As part of its support for public interest initiatives, Modirum Platforms will provide the necessary equipment for temporary use over a one-year period. The results of this pilot phase will serve as a basis for evaluating the potential to expand the system to a national level.
