Wildfires and Landfill Fires in North Macedonia
Overview
North Macedonia continues to face widespread wildfires, with the Crisis Management Center reporting 28 open-air fires registered by 18:00 on September 6, 11 of which remained active.
In the Brvenica Municipality, the major fire near the village of Mileteino that threatened residential areas was eventually placed under control. However, officials warned that strong winds could reignite the blaze. Emergency responders had previously deployed two air tractors and police helicopters to assist firefighters working on steep, inaccessible terrain at altitudes exceeding 1,600 meters.
In the capital, smoke from a long-running fire in the Ramno area of Skopska Crna Gora continues to affect parts of Skopje. This follows earlier reports of thick black smoke from a landfill fire near the Stenkovec sports airport, which Stojanche Angelov, Director of the Directorate for Protection and Rescue (DZS), described as being as dense as an ‘atomic bomb.’
Containment efforts in the Ramno area have involved Skopje firefighters, police helicopters, and approximately 30 members of the Army. The combination of the Stenkovec landfill fire and the Ramno blaze has resulted in strong winds carrying smoke and unpleasant odors toward the city.
