Wildfires and Landfill Fire Detection in North Macedonia

Overview

North Macedonia continues to face widespread wildfires and landfill fires. Following a period of high activity in September, the country is experiencing renewed fire incidents.

On October 4, the Crisis Management Center (CMC) recorded 46 open-space fires in a single day. Of these, 29 were extinguished and one was brought under control, while 16 remained active. These fires affected diverse terrains, including forests, pastures, and slopes, with significant activity reported in Shar Mountain near Bogovinsko Lake, as well as Vrapčište, Bitola, Prilep, Gevgelija, Debar, Tetovo, Čaška, Lipkovo, Kumanovo, Studeničani, Saraj, and Dolneni. Specific incidents included pine forest fires in Lipkovo and mixed forest fires in Gevgelija.

By October 7, the country experienced another surge in activity. The CMC reported 31 fires within a 24-hour period, of which 27 were successfully extinguished. As of 18:30 on the reporting day, 21 open-air fires had been registered, with 13 liquidated and 8 remaining active. These active fires were located in municipalities including Debar (Gorno Kosovrasti), Resen (Kriveni), Struga (Presenikovo), Čaška (Gorno Jabolčište), Negotino (Mušinci), Veles (Mamutčevo), Lipkovo (Strima), and Saraj (Kondovo). Extinguished fires were noted in Struga, Novaci, Prilep, Strumica, Tetovo, Gostivar, and a landfill in Kumanovo.

In response to environmental risks, the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning has launched a pilot project to improve early detection of landfill fires. Through a cooperation memorandum with the Skopje-based company Modirum Platforms, the initiative will utilize modern cameras, intelligent video analytics, and artificial intelligence to detect smoke and fire in real time.
