North Macedonia moves to tighten e‑scooter regulations

The Macedonian parliament is considering amendments to the Traffic Safety Law that would restrict electric scooter use. Proposed measures include raising the minimum age for riders to 18 years, capping the maximum speed at 20 km/h, and imposing stricter penalties such as fines and up to a 30‑day temporary confiscation of the scooter for violations.

MP Nikola Micevski of the VMRO‑DPMNE party highlighted that more than half of recent e‑scooter accidents involved riders aged 16‑17. Over the past two and a half years, around 2,000 traffic incidents involved two‑wheel vehicles, resulting in 46 deaths, hundreds of serious injuries and many minor injuries. The proposals are slated for debate in a fast‑track parliamentary session.
