North Macedonia renovates student dorms with EU and German funding

The government of North Macedonia is modernising its student housing, with the first two fully renovated dorms – Stev Naumov and Kuzman Shapkarev in Skopje – slated to open for the new academic year. The projects are part of an €86 million investment framework that will upgrade nine state‑run student dorms and seven resource centres for children and youth with special educational needs.

Funding comes from €60 million provided by the German development bank KfW, €22 million in non‑repayable EU grants and about €4 million from the Ministry of Education and Science. Minister Vesna Janeska, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, EU ambassador Mihalis Rokas and Deputy Prime Minister Bekim Sali visited the Stev Naumov site. Janeska said the dorm will be “modern and with high energy efficiency” and thanked the European partners for accelerating the country’s integration into the EU education space.

The renovations aim to improve living standards for students, increase energy efficiency of campus buildings and demonstrate the impact of EU and German support on North Macedonia’s development agenda.
