North Rhine-Westphalia doubles military construction budget
North Rhine-Westphalia is significantly increasing investment in military infrastructure. Between 2026 and 2029, the state's construction administration plans to execute projects worth approximately 1.6 billion euros on behalf of the federal government. This represents more than double the construction volume of the previous four-year period.
Finance Minister Marcus Optendrenk announced the plans during a visit to the NATO Airspace Security Command Center in Uedem. Key projects include the construction of a new command center for NATO air operations in Uedem, valued at roughly 92 million euros, and a 21-million-euro technical upgrade for the nearby Marienbaum radar station.
The state is supporting these federal and NATO-related projects by providing additional personnel and streamlining the approval process for military facilities such as barracks.
