North Rhine-Westphalia explores satellite technology for wildfire detection

The North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Agriculture is investigating the use of satellites equipped with thermal imaging cameras to improve the early detection of forest fires. This technology could be particularly effective at night, as satellites can detect heat signatures in less populated areas where human observation is limited.

Currently, most fire reports in the region come from people visiting frequently used forests. To supplement this, the state has been utilizing the ‘FireWatch’ pilot project on the Lower Rhine since 2024. This semi-automatic camera system detects smoke from long distances and has identified over 100 fires as of August, including a recent blaze near Sonsbeck.
