Overview
Efforts to improve wildfire detection and management in Western Europe have expanded from regional technological investigations to a multi-national alliance.
Initially, the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Agriculture in Germany began exploring satellite technology with thermal imaging to detect heat signatures in less populated areas, particularly at night. This follows the use of the ‘FireWatch’ pilot project on the Lower Rhine, a semi-automatic camera system that has identified over 100 fires since 2024.
Building on these detection capabilities, Germany, the Netherlands, and Flanders have formed a tripartite alliance to combat increasing wildfire risks. This partnership aims to strengthen cross-border collaboration and facilitate seamless emergency responses. The alliance includes the ‘Fire-Watch’ initiative, which utilizes intelligent camera systems, and a commitment from Flanders and the Netherlands to develop a unified wildfire management strategy focused on faster detection and climate change adaptation.
