North Rhine-Westphalia faces labor shifts as aging population rises

Demographic shifts in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) are significantly impacting the labor market. Data from IT.NRW indicates that 2.05 million people aged 55 to 64 were employed in the state in 2025, representing 72.7 percent of that age group. This is a substantial increase from 42.9 percent in 2005.

In the 65 to 74 age bracket, the employment rate rose from 4.3 percent in 2005 to 17.5 percent in 2025. Even among those receiving a statutory pension, one in seven continues to work. This trend is attributed to structural factors, including rising retirement ages and reduced incentives for early retirement, creating a challenge for the German 'Mittelstand' as a large cohort of workers prepares to exit the market.

Local data highlights specific regional aging trends. In the city of Dorsten, the average age reached 46.7 years by the end of 2025, an increase of 2.5 years since 2011. This makes Dorsten older than both the NRW average of 44.6 years and the German national average of 45.0 years.
